Founded in Chicago in 1917, our motto is ‘WE SERVE’ and there are many ways in which we go about helping others.
We are well known for both preventing and curing blindness – indeed one of our members came up with the white stick so familiar today. In the developing nations we raise awareness, conduct vision screenings, equip hospitals and clinics, distribute medicines and take pride in our Sight First programme. We don’t just stop at sight. We also invest time and money in fighting diabetes around the globe as well as being responsible for Dentaid and our famous ‘message in a bottle’. We recently raised $10 million to prevent measles in developing countries.
Since 1968, the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF)has awarded more than $700 million in grants to support humanitarian projects around the world. Together, our Foundation and Lions members assist communities following natural disasters by providing for immediate needs such as food, water, shelter, clothing and medical supplies as well as aiding in long term reconstruction. We are still working hard in helping Haiti get back on it’s feet.
In order that our work will carry on into the future we support and encourage youth. Our Leo programme provides the opportunity for personal development through volunteering. There are 144,000 Leos in 5700 clubs in 140 countries. In the local community we often donate funds or equipment to children, schools, clubs and groups to facilitate their development. Internationally, we offer many programmes including the Peace Poster Contest, Youth Camps and Exchange.

• Lions is an international organisation represented in 206 countries by more than 45,000 clubs with nearly 1,400,000 members
• There are nearly 1000 Lions Clubs in the British Isles and Ireland. This territory is known as Multiple District 105 which is comprised of 13 Districts and the 66 clubs in Hampshire, Berkshire, part of Wiltshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight, and the Channel Islands are designated as District 105D.
• District 105D is comprised of several Zones and Bridport falls in a zone that includes Dorchester, Sherborne, Weymouth and Blackmore Vale.
About The Lions Club of Bridport
The club was formed in 1973 and since then we have been serving towns and villages across a large part of west Dorset – from Lyme Regis to the west, to Beaminster in the north and Abbotsbury to the east. If you live in Askerswell, Loders, the Kingcombes, Melplash, Salwayash or the Marshwood Vale we are here to help. If you didn’t get a mention it’s because there are so many small communities in this neck of the woods but rest assured you are still on our radar and entitled to play a part in our club. Our nearest Lions clubs in Dorset are at Dorchester and Weymouth while in Somerset there is Crewkerne and in Devon there’s Axminster and Seaton.

Nestled within the beautiful wilderness of the West Dorset countryside and with a population of approximately 13,000 residents, Bridport is a small but lively and picturesque market town in Dorset on the south west coast of England. Located within a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and along the world famous Jurassic coastline, the town is twinned with Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue in north-western France. The area also incorporates many local villages and the town of Beaminster. With a strong and prosperous community spirit, the Bridport area is a magnet for tourism and often hosts many fundraising events for example the Hat Festival, Food festival & Swimarathon to raise money for charities locally, nationally, & internationally.
Things you should know about us
The Lions motto is ‘to serve’ our community and we do this by raising funds and giving freely of our time. Watch out for us at Easter when we make our egg collections, join us at the Food Festival in summer, participate in our Swimarathon in the autumn and be generous to our Father Christmas at the end of the year. However, we collect all through the year so that we can fund requests from the community, always ensuring that we are vigilant in assessing needs as they are presented to us. Furthermore, every pound that we collect is a pound that will go to the causes we support because all administration costs are met from our own pockets or sponsorship.
As a social group we also have fun, while enjoying the challenge of service and the fulfilment it provides. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at the Haddon House Hotel, West Bay.
